![]() ![]() The FreeCol project was launched on January 3 rd, 2002. Natives can be valuable trade partners, or hostile enemies. FreeCol is mostly programmed in Java and should thus be platform-independent. The player gradually builds up these colonies with help from the European king until no help from Europe is. With a few settlers, the player builds up colonies in the New World, struggling for power with other colonies from rival Europeans. Released under the GNU General Public License, FreeCol is free software. In 2023, the FreeCol project reached its 1.0 release, after twenty years of development. FreeCol is a clone of Sid Meier's Colonization. FreeCol is free and open source software released under the GNU GPL-2.0-or-later. For example, they can eventually be upgraded to forts, shipyards, and other buildings. FreeCol is a 4X video game, a clone of Sid Meier's Colonization. Towns can be upgraded through time, with the necessary wood and tools. Not enough liberty bells will eventually lead to more "tories", which means the player will be further away from his/her goal of independence from their monarch. If, for example, the player does not have enough food, his/her colonists will starve. The player will also need to balance food production, and produce liberty bells, among other factors. Plowing improves the productive capacity of farming while roads improve the productivity of mining. Use the minimap at bottom left, pressing 'minus' as many times as necessary to reach the 'total map' view, to work out where you are.
