Red Queen was released as the promotional single, becoming the most successful one, followed by Crumbling Land and Summer '68. The album ultimately became Pink Floyd's first breakthrough in the United Kingdom, topping the charts, while reaching number 55 in the United States. The 23-minute original piece would be later released as a reissued bonus track. Other plan was that the members should contribute with at least one individual track, despite the fact that there are more than one tracks written by each member. The piece was later discarded, retaining three sections, Father's Shout and Breast Milky under Atom Heart Mother, and Remergence as Atom Heart Mother (Remergence). Initially conceived as a suite, the title track was composed altogether by Pink Floyd and songwriting partner Ron Geesin, being performed live throughout the 1970 tour. The cover, designed by Hipgnosis, was the group's reaction to the psychedelic space rock imagery associated with Pink Floyd at the time. It is considered a huge step back from the experimental sound the group was pursuing since their debut album while diving into a pastoral and folk-influenced music, with little experimental influence. It was the last album of the group with Norman Smith's involvement, released on 2 October 1970 by Blackhill Records and distributed by Capitol Records. Basking in the Sunshine of a Bygone AfternoonĪtom Heart Mother is the fifth studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd.
